Impact and Belonging

The Classics Department is committed to fostering greater multicultural awareness and inclusion, and helping students with different backgrounds and needs to succeed.

The Department of Classics recognizes that the lack of diversity in our discipline undermines our broader purpose to lift students and society through an understanding of the ancient world and its legacy in our lives. We strive to broaden access to our programs by expanding our outreach and recruitment efforts to students of color both at KU and in feeder schools such as KCCC and public high schools in the KC metro area. We are aggressive in securing funding to recruit and retain students of color in our B.A./B.G.S. and M.A. programs. We are committed to mentoring and advising these students to support their academic and personal success. Additional sources of support include opportunities for students to network with visiting professors and scholars, loans of textbooks for students who cannot afford to purchase them, and an emergency fund for students in financial need.
